Nazir Tanbouli - Constructed Mythologies
May 10th until 6th July 2008
Nazir Tanbouli was born in Alexandria, Egypt. His work encompasses drawing, murals, large-scale paintings and installation based on his observations and experience of a place.
The exhibition at WHITEWALL takes the imaginative influence and human characteristic of Milton Keynes and its citizens and presents them within a framework of mythical fantasia. The work challenges the viewer’s imagination to construct a new mythology for Milton Keynes with local heroes and legendary figures.
Nazir responded to Milton Keynes with a view of the city that reflects his countries ancestral development – Alexandria was once a new town in 330 BC and within a generation it was one of the most famous cities in the world. When it was built Alexandria reflected the dynamism of the new, a challenge to old ways. Over centuries it has now become a mythic place.
This work is inspired by the importance of personal and collective myth making, a process that is constantly updated, and made new for each generation. Nazir’s work explores the idea that communities are built on a collaborative form of storytelling, where transient gossip begins to crystallise into urban myth. His work engages us with strong bold images and colours.
A catalogue of this project is available with text by cultural commentator Judith Palmer. Further details on the work of Nazir Tanbouli can be found from www.nariztanbouli.com
